Pittsburgh linebackers coach Keith Butler was fired from that position in Cleveland after a 2002 playoff loss to Pittsburgh.
The Browns blew a 17-point third-quarter lead.
“We were doing fine until Butch (Davis) told us to stop blitzing,” Butler said. “And we stopped blitzing. And they kicked our butt.”
Davis, the Browns’ head coach, grew antsy about the way defensive coordinator Foge Fazio was calling the game.
“We had put some pressure on Tommy Maddox,” Butler said. “It was effective. They hit us one time on some pressure I think in the third quarter.
“Butch got on the headsets and told Foge, ‘Get into a three-man rush. Drop eight.’
“We couldn’t get any pressure on Tommy Maddox and he picked us apart.
“It’s unfortunate, but that’s what happened.”
Butler basically gave the same version Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Bruce Arians shared earlier in the week. Arians was Cleveland’s offensive coordinator in that game.
Butte was big
Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers says he owes a debt of gratitude to Butte Community College, where he played between high school and Cal.
“It was the most important year of my young high school career,” he said. “I learned a lot as an 18-year-old kid, playing with guys from all over the country.
“There was a guy from Canada, a 25-year-old center, guys who had been to prison ... bounce-backs from Division I ... local guys.
“I had to figure out a way to lead them. I learned a lot about myself. I also got some confidence back.
“I still keep in touch with a lot of those guys.”
Butte is surrounded by the northern Califorrnia towns of Chico, Oroville and Paradise.
Brady, Manning, etc.
Some of the Steelers are saying quarterback Ben Roethlisberger should be mentioned in the same breath as Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Drew Brees.
One of them is Kevin Colbert, the Steelers’ chief player personnel architect.
“Bottom line, Ben is a winner,” Colbert said. “Even if statistically he doesn’t match up ... did he win the game?
“There might be games where he throws for 400 yards and we don’t win. That is not what we want.”
The Steelers seem to agree that Roethlisberger is a huge key to their success. They aren’t as harmonious in discussions about how much Roethlisberger should pass.
• Green Bay head coach Mike McCarthy worries about things his players might let out via social media.
“I won’t even let my daughter have a Facebook account,” he said. “That tells you what I think about Twitter.”
• The Packers have had to practice at an indoor high school facility because the field at Southern Methodist University is frozen over.
The complex is at Highland Park High School, north of Dallas. Think Massillon.
