Something inspiring for the community

Artist Cindy Roberts (left) and homeowner Lisa Hillmann posed by the almost finished mural on Hillmann's fence Saturday morning. Hillmann said she plans to paint the remainder of the fence white.

Have you noticed the colorful mural on the fence across the alley south of Expressway? If not, it’s time to take a drive by and enjoy something new in Sleepy Eye.

“I just wanted something uplifting when life has become so difficult for everyone,” said Lisa Hillmann, whose fence the mural is painted on. “And what better than the American flag and honoring those who gave their life to keep us safe and those who serve, both currently and in the past.”

Hillmann said she saw a post on Facebook from Cindy Roberts, formerly of Sleepy Eye, that she would be in the area visiting family for awhile, and that if anyone had a project they would like done to contact her.

“So that got me thinking. I just knew we had the perfect location to do something inspiring for our community,” Hillmann said.

Hillmann said she originally wanted a waving flag.

“I didn’t think a flag would work on that fence,” said Roberts, “I sketched this idea with patriotic colors and silhouettes of members of several military branches and Lisa said yes.”

“I love how the silhouettes don’t depict a particular color or race,” Hillmann said. “I believe we are all created equal in God’s eyes. I just pray that we can all come together and appreciate the differences in each other. So in everything, do to others as you would have them do to you. Matthew 7:12.

Hillmann is very happy with how her fence project turned out. She said she plans to paint the remainder of the fence white.

“I am so inspired by her perfection and attitude she had while doing this project,” Hillmann said of Roberts. “She has a good heart! I would recommend her to everyone. Thank you, Cindy!”
