50 years ago – July 8, 1975

Golfers nine through 17 are eligible to take part in the annual Jaycee Junior golf tournament at the Sleepy Eye golf course Thursday. Sign up time is 9:30. The top two golfers will qualify for the state tournament at Detroit Lakes. Tom Noterman is in charge of arrangements.

Dean Deibele pitched a no-hitter Thursday evening as Sleepy Eye American Legion baseball team defeated Trimont 25-0. Deibele struck out the first nine men he faced and ended up with 11 strikeouts for the five-inning game.

35 years ago – July 12, 1990

Redwood Speedway news: Bomber driver Todd Heiderscheidt, who is tied for the point lead in that class, added yet another trophy to his collection this year. He also had a good night of racing with two seconds and the first in the trophy dash.

Sleepy Eye PeeWees jumped to a big 28-3 second-inning lead against Comfrey and continued to control the game for the remaining three innings, defeating Comfrey 42-4. Leading Sleepy Eye in the barrage was Lynn Schneider, smashing two home runs and recording a double as well.

20 years ago – July 7, 2005

Stark raised its record to 10-4 with a 6-1 win over St. James June 29. Brad Mathiowetz held St. James hitless through the first seven innings, issuing just two walks. He finished the game yielding two hits and won run while striking out seven.

The St. Mary’s high school basketball team went 2-1 at the Breakdown Summer Showcase in Becker June 25. They fell in their first game to Fergus Falls. Game two saw the squad come out on top of Braham 54-34. Molly Mathiowetz had 18 points while Maria Gangelhoff added 17. St. Mary’s was victorious in their final game over Rockford 50-22. Mathiowetz and Gangelhoff had 12 and 11 points.
