50 years ago – Sept. 3, 1974

Cindy Kramer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Kramer, was crowned Miss Godahl at that community’s annual Labor Day celebration Monday. Miss Kramer, the new Miss Godahl, is a senior at Sleepy Eye High School. She plans to take nurse’s training at Winona following her graduation.

The Jens (Syl) Jensens, who moved to Sheriden, Oregon, August 19, are enjoying life in the West, according to a note received at the Herald-Dispatch this morning. “I miss those 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. executive sessions at the bakery,” Syl said.

35 years ago – Sept. 7, 1989

Appointed by Mayor Harry Hornbrook to the new Sleepy Eye Economic Development Authority were Wayne Novotny, James Broich, James Larson, Randy Schultz, Judy Beech, Steve Windschitl, and Robert Weiss. The EDA allows the city to become involved in helping finance new or expanding businesses.

Daylight hours are shorter, nights are cooler and school is in session, all signs that fall is almost here. The Great Grassroot Gathering is almost here too and the Sleepy Eye Area Historical Society would like to encourage anyone who enjoys decorating to enter the scarecrow contest at the Grassroots Gathering.

20 years ago – Sept. 2, 2004

The Board of Education appropriated $2,100 to cover the airfare for the five cheerleaders and two chaperones traveling to Orlando, Fla. for the 2005 Capital One Bowl. The cheerleaders won a competition in July which qualified them to participate in a pre-game performance with other cheerleaders from across the nation.

The Inquiring Photographer asked “What’s the best part of city league softball?” Bryan Weiss said, “The exercise and competition.” Craig Murphy said, “Orchid Inn Happy Hour and the mosquitoes.” Steve Geschwind said, “Seeing Gramps at all the games and the comradery between teammates.”

10 years ago – Sept. 4, 2014

In 1908, 106 years ago, the graduating class of Sleepy Eye High School consisted of 16 young women and nine young men, one of which was Theresa Lillian VanKinder. Descendents of VanKinder, recently donated the diploma and pictures of the 1908 graduating class back to the school. After graduating, Theresa went on to teach country school in Mulligan Township.

Faith United Methodist Church is excited to announce a new program for kids and families. JAM (Jesus and Me) will be held Wednesdays beginning Sept. 10 from 6-8 p.m. This program is designed for ages three years to senior high students, but everyone is welcome regardless of age or religion.
