Sleepy Eye Lake is not being lowered according to Park and Recreation Director Wayne Pelzel. The level of the lake was established in the late 1930s when both the bridge to Sportsman’s Park and a cement retaining wall were built. “That retaining wall is the State’s established high water mark,” said Pelzel. “That’s the level we have to live with.” Rumors of a plan to change the level of the lake apparently stemmed from the cleaning of the ditch adjacent to the lake by MnDOT.

Now that building has been renamed Lake Villa Maria and tenants are in the process of moving into the 21 senior independent living apartments created there. Another transformation took place in the former dining room area. A new cafeteria line, dining room for up to 70, and a private dining area for about 10 has been open since Sept. 1. Tenants have the option to sign up for a meal plan and the public is welcome to purchase meals at the cafeteria, according to Administrator Sister Sharon Williams.
