50 years ago – Oct. 31, 1974
Nineteen-hour dry spell — In a letter addressed to mayors, city clerks, and chiefs of police, County Attorney Robert Berens says: “Nov. 5, 1874, is Election Day and a question generally arises as to the sale of liquor on election days. MSA 340.014 and 340.034 provide that neither intoxicating nor non-intoxicating malt liquor shall be sold between the hours of one a.m. and eight o’clock p.m. on the day of any statewide election.”
Paula Grundmeyer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Armin Grundmeyer, and a junior at Sleepy Eye High School, placed first among speakers from 13 counties in the Area Soil and Conservation district speaking contest at Mankato Saturday. Topic was “How does Soil and Water Conservation affect our environment?”
35 years ago – Oct. 26, 1989
The Inquiring Photographer asked, “Should SE school consolidate athletic programs?” Gail Heiderscheidt said, “Absolutely. I think they could use both resources to everybody’s advantage. The kids want it.” Tim Myers said, “Yes. We could have a better team.”
Area subscribers of The Farmer magazine may have done a double take on a McDonald’s ad. Where had they seen that face before? It was Jill Marti, daughter of Roger and Marsha Marti, a freshman at the University of Minnesota, majoring in Animal and Plant Systems. Jill was pictured in the ad with her Holstein, Bunny.
20 years ago – Oct. 28, 2004
Don “Pudge” Mickelson was honored at a retirement party at the city building Tuesday afternoon. Mickelson is retiring as Sleepy Eye’s police chief after 32 years on the force.
The FFA Soils Judging team qualified for state after placing second in region VI. Members of the team include Chad Zuhlsdorf, Brady Augustin, Justin Helget, Mike Petersen and Kyle Sellner. Augustin placed fourth, Petersen placed fifth and Zuhlsdorf 10th in individual competition.
10 years ago – Oct. 30, 2014
At the annual meeting of the Sleepy Eye chapter of Let’s Go Fishing, volunteer Lenny Seidl received the group’s “You Made a Reel Difference” traveling trophy for the third consecutive year. Since 2012, Lenny has received this award, given out to the top volunteer for runs – going on 26 this year. Kayla Nason was close behind him at 22 runs.
Sleepy Eye Public School students are preparing for fall production of “Peril on the High Seas.” This riotous adventure is a full length melodrama sent in the Roaring Twenties. The heroine, Merry Ann Sweet, is played by Lauren Laffen. Merry falls for handsome waiter, Cary De Mille, played by Matt Berkner. Performances take place Nov. 7, 8 and 9.
