60 years ago – Oct. 22, 1964

Rex Beech and Bob Nielsen, co-chairmen of Sleepy Eye’s Halloween promotion, said at the Wednesday morning meeting of retailers that entries for the window painting contest must be in by Saturday, Oct. 24.

Students in Sleepy Eye school showed an overwhelming preference for President Lyndon B. Johnson over Senator Barry Goldwater in a straw vote taken Tuesday at the request of the Herald-Dispatch. Johnson received 572 votes, Goldwater 248. Voting were upper six classes at St. Mary’s and Public and the seventh and eighth graders at St. John’s.

45 years ago – Oct. 25, 1979

The second floor of the Pizza Haven will be occupied by a cast of ghoulish characters Saturday, Oct. 27, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. During those three frightful hours, Sleepy Eye’s Jaycee Women will be offering their version of a haunted house. Michele Krenz is the project chairman. The haunted house will be open to young and old for 50 cents.

Ed Reiner, general manager of the Sleepy Eye Farmer’s Elevator, submitted his resignation to the elevator’s board directors Saturday. Florian Wersal, manager of the elevator’s fertilizer plant at Evan also resigned. Reiner and Wersal have purchased Hornick Farm Supply in Springfield.

30 years ago – Oct. 20, 1994

The Brown County Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate damage that occurred at the Sleepy Eye Golf Course Oct. 11-12. According to Course Superintendent Arlyn Boddy, a storage shed was broken into and nine golf carts were taken out on the surrounding golf course area. “It looks as if they basically played demo derby on the greens,” Boddy said.

Sleepy Eye Police Chief Ron Ellevold advised motorists to lock up their vehicles, remove valuables and don’t leave keys in the car’s ignition. Sleepy Eye Police are currently investigating three stolen vehicle incidents that happened over the past week.

15 years ago – Oct. 22, 2009

The Women’s Expo sponsored by the Sleepy Eye Medical Center will be held this Saturday, Oct. 24 and, like last year’s event, women will not want to miss it. “It should be good,” Naomi Weiss, Community Relations Coordinator and planning committee member said. “We’re excited about the Expo,” committee member Patti Pelzel added. “We think people really enjoyed last year’s Expo.”

Mayor Jim Broich won $15,000 in the Minnesota Lotter’s Red Hot Cherries scratch game. THe winning ticket was purchased at Freedom Valu Center. Just a few months ago, Doug Domeier of Sleepy Eye won $13,000 in the Minnesota State Lottery game Northstar Cash. He bought his ticket at the Cenex C-Store.
