50 years ago – Oct. 17, 1974
Governor Wendell Anderson made another trip to the Orchid Inn here Wednesday and unleashed a strong attack against his Republican opponent. Anderson has been criticized for his education program and taxing, but stood up and said to the 175 attending that he is proud of the state’s tax structure and education component.
Sleepy Eye senior citizens – 62 or more – are in for a special treat Tuesday, Nov. 26. Donald Stimpert, owner of the Orchid Inn, said he will open his facility to all senior citizens for a special Thanksgiving Party that night. It will be fun-packed. And, free. Included is a dinner, entertainment and dancing.
35 years ago – Oct. 19, 1989
Few people are aware that Sleepy Eye has its own film star. Maybe that’s because the fame came so recently. Or maybe it’s because the film in question is only 30 seconds long. Be that as it may, plenty of attention has been focused on Dennis Hoffrogge, Sleepy Eye’s State Farm Insurance agent, over the past few days. Hoffrogge was chosen for the lead role in a television commercial for State Farm Insurance.
Dawn Schauman (Sleepy Eye High School) and Cory Haala (St. Mary’s High School) have been named this school year’s first Lions Club Students of the Month.
20 years ago – Oct. 14, 2004
Sleepy Eye Ambulance coordinator Shari Hittesdorf was at the Oct. 7 meeting of the city council to request that the council allow volunteer ambulance attendants to participate in PERA, or Public Employees Retirement Account. She suggested five percent be considered for the contribution. The council passed the request after councilor Wayne Novotny introduced the resolution and moved its adoption. Richard Zinniel seconded the motion.
Pastor Ron Freimark of Trinity Lutheran Church is retiring and moving to Woodbury, after 27 years of service in Sleepy Eye, with forty total years as a Lutheran pastor. “I am now baptizing children of the children I baptized the first years of my ministry here.

The City of Sleepy Eye provided Notice of Special Meeting of the City Council to be held Oct. 17 at 6 p.m. in the council chambers. The purpose of the meeting is preliminary consideration of allegations against a City of Sleepy Eye City Council member.
The establishment of a high school trap shooting team in Sleepy Eye was approved by the Sleepy Eye District 84 Board of Education at their Oct. 9 meeting. At the September board meeting a presentation was made by the Sleepy Eye Sportsmen’s Club about starting a team made up of girls and boys from both Sleepy Eye High School and St. Mary’s High School.
