60 years ago – June 9, 1964
Father S.J. Adrian marked his 25th anniversary in the priesthood Sunday, with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Adrian of St. Paul present at St. Mary’s Church. Father Adrian officiated at a solemn high Mass with Bishop Alphonse J. Schadweiler presiding. An afternoon and evening reception was attended by several hundred.
Youngsters of Sleepy Eye will again enjoy the wading pool in South Park starting tomorrow. The pool will be open from one until four with Gloria Windschitl in charge. The Lions Club has sponsored the wading pool for a number of years.
45 years ago – June 7, 1979
Fire nearly destroyed Berdan’s Plumbing and Heating at 136 First Avenue North Wednesday. The Sleepy Eye Fire Department was called to the blaze at 3:30 p.m. and fought three hours to control it. Fire Chief Charles Moldaschel said, “The smoke was so dense we couldn’t see a thing, even with our masks and air packs. All we know is that there is extensive damage to the building.”
The Inquiring Photographer asked kids what their plans are for the summer. Matthew Okerman said, “I like riding my bike and going swimming and camping. I’m not really glad to be out of school now, because I have to go to a babysitter.”
30 years ago – June 9, 1994
MTV’s days are numbered for subscribers of Midwest Cablevision in Sleepy Eye. The cable TV advisory board has received letters and a petition circulated through area churches signed by 981 people asking to get rid of MTV. The board asked the city council to propose a resolution asking the replace MTV with VH-1, which was described as a mellow music video channel with no “Beavis and Butthead,” and no rap music. A Midwest Cablevision representative said the plan is to comply with the request.
Janel Dybdahl was one of three students to deliver a commencement address at Sleepy Eye High School graduation. Her speech was titled “Memories that Last a Lifetime.”
15 years ago – June 4, 2009
After 19 years as an administrator at Sleepy Eye Public School, Superintendent Arla Docktor said she is excited to see what the next phase of her life will bring. “I’d like to stay in education, but if I find myself in the corporate world that would be okay too.
The Sleepy Eye Family Aquatic Center is gearing up for its second season. On Friday, June 5 at 1:30 p.m., the center will open its doors to those looking to cool off from the summer heat. Sarah Hinderman is the aquatic center manager.
