60 years ago – June 18, 1964

Full page ad: A most cordial invitation is extended to all residents of Sleepy Eye and southern Minnesota to see the “all new” Orchid Inn which was built for your dining enjoyment. Open House for the Public, 7 p.m. to Midnight, Monday, July 22. [The Minnesota Room and other improvements had been completed.]

Canning of peas at the California Packing Corporation will begin Friday, according to Aaron Gregg, plant superintendent. Thanks to recent rains, a normal crop is anticipated. The pack will last approximately 35 days. Mobile viners will be used here for the first time this season.

45 years ago – June 21, 1979

Karin Hansen, daughter of Harold (Hooch) and Jeanne Hansen, was crowned Miss Sleepy Eye at the 52nd Annual Miss Sleepy Eye Pageant Sunday at the Orchid Inn. Katie Schotzko, daughter of Ed and MaryLee Schotzko and Carole Tauer, daughter of Ray and Peggy Tauer were named first and second runner-ups. New this year was the Little Miss Sleepy Eye Pageant and Jennifer Heiderscheidt was named Little Miss Sleepy Eye.

The clubhouse at Sleepy Eye Municipal Golf Course was burglarized some time Monday evening, according to the Brown County Sheriff’s Department. Numerous golf clubs and bags are missing, but further information is not available pending investigation.

30 years ago – June 16, 1994

Editorial: The only one that can control the amount of violence, sex, and vulgarity you see and hear on television is you. It’s not the church’s responsibility or the city’s. It’s up to you. When you’ve seen enough, had it up to your eyeballs, and can’t take it anymore, reach over to your remote and press the off button. [In relation to the news that the local cable company would not be removing MTV from the local lineup.]

The Inquiring Photographer asked “What do you think about Sleepy Eye keeping MTV?” Shelly Haas said, “I think it’s fine because it should be up to parents to control what their kids watch.” Tricia Seidl said, “I don’t watch it so I don’t really care.” Kevin Bushard said, “I really have no viewpoint on it because we don’t get in on our TV anyway.”

15 years ago – June 18, 2009

Despite chilly weather, the Sleepy Eye Royalty got a warm welcome at the 75th Annual Pow Wow Days celebration in Mt. Lake Monday evening. Miss Sleepy Eye Mikayla Mages, attendant Allison Heiderscheidt, Little Miss Holiday Madison Heiderscheidt and Little Mr. Holiday Carter Brinkman participated in their first parade of the season.

Sleepy Eye VFW, VFW Auxiliary, American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary and Sleepy Eye Honor Guard contributed $2,000 to the Sleepy Eye Fire Department’s grass rig fund. [Pictured] Aut Seidl made the donation for the groups to Sleepy Eye Fireman Kenny Tauer.
