50 years ago – July 11, 1974

The Warrior Marching Band, under the direction of Doug Kodet, will enter parade competition at Westbrook tonight at 7 p.m. The parade and competition is part of the three day Hospital Benefit Days. Approximately 20 marching bands will be included in the parade competition. Band members are reminded to bring belts for the uniform trousers and wear black socks and band shoes (shoes available at The Palace and Ouren’s Family Shoes).

Attendance at the municipal swimming pool during the current hot spell has been averaging about 525 per day, according to Mary Ann Schuman, manager. Record for a single day is 719 set June 9, 1973. Biggest day so far this year was June 4 when 711 made use of the pool.

35 years ago – July 13, 1989

Low water levels at Sleepy Eye Lake have exposed rocks, tree limbs and other debris, and members of the lake improvement committee are seeking volunteer help to clean it up. Volunteers are asked to gather at the lake July 29 at 9 a.m. Committee member Jim Ganske estimated that half the lake shore needed cleaning. He said a burning permit would be obtained and tree limbs would be gathered and burned on the shore.

Crazy bargains will be the talk of the town Friday and Saturday when Sleepy Eye Chamber of Commerce and Retail Association sponsor Crazy Days. There will be a Kiddie Parade Friday at 1:15 p.m. To round out the weekend, the Jaycees will hold its annual Flight Breakfast with crazy pancake flipper, Chris Cakes Sunday from 6:30 a.m. to noon.

25 years ago – July 8, 1999

Many Sleepy Eye residents showed a disregard for the heat and humidity on Saturday to attend the dedication ceremony for the addition at Dyckman Free Library. Music was provided by the Sleepy Eye Community Band and refreshments were served by the Qui Vive Club.

Last Friday Lavonne Roberts was honored for 50 years of employment at The Palace. She says she was lucky to have bosses and fellow employees who have been very easy to work with. “You have to have a boss that’ll put up with you for all those years,” Roberts said. Though she is retired now, Roberts still enjoys coming in and helping out when needed.

10 years ago – July 10, 2014

There was a large turnout on July 4 for the Veteran’s Park Dedication, where the Sleepy Eye Honor Guard performed a flag retiring ceremony. EDA Coordinator Kurk Kramer said the EDA decided to fund most of the park’s development by donations, in which it received over $70,000 from over 80 organizations and donors in town.

From the EDA Update: The City has received the signed purchase agreement for property from Casey’s General Store. Work on the new store should begin in the coming weeks as it is coordinated with the hard surfacing of roads in the Snow Addition.
