50 years ago – Jan. 23, 1975
Municipal Hospital administrator for the past five years, Richard Spyhalski, submitted his resignation to the Hospital Board last evening. He will become assistant administrator at a hospital near his home town in Wisconsin.
An award for operating an outstanding restaurant and doing an exceptional job of handling the Minnesota Pork Producer’s banquet was presented to Mr. and Mrs. Donald Stimpert Tuesday evening at the annual banquet of the state Pork Producers.
35 years ago – Jan. 25, 1990
Mayor Harry Hornbrook said he intends to recommend to the Sleepy Eye City Council that the city withdraw from participation in the Sleepy Eye Lake dredging project. He said he was taking this action because the firing of Jim Ganske as head of the dredging operation demonstrated that the county wasn’t interested in doing a good job with the project.
Dr. Robert Rubey has purchased Dr. George Woessner’s dental practice as of the first of the year. Woessner retired after more that 39 years as a dentist in Sleepy Eye. Rubey, who has had a practice in Sleepy Eye for 17 years, expanded his own office this past summer, creating three complete operating rooms.
20 years ago – Jan. 20, 2005
Awards presented at the 54th annual meeting of the Sleepy Eye Area Chamber of Commerce included the “Big Chief” award to Greg Gangelhoff, the Extraordinary Volunteer award to Rita Sabatino, and the Shining Star award to Judy Beech.
Variety is the spice of life – and it is the variety of daily tasks that Rick Gilliland appreciates as assistant manager at McCabe’s Ace Hardware. “It’s not the same thing day in and day out,” Rick said. “The main this is I never know what to expect when the day begins.”
10 years ago – Jan. 22, 2015
There is probably not a Sleepy Eye post office customer who Janet Holm and Tom Larson do not know. Together the duo has been working as clerk and rural postal carrier for the past 33 years. These days are coming to an end, Larson retired Dec. 1 and Holm will retire Jan. 23.
Triple A Award winners at Sleepy Eye schools are Rebecca Schmidt and Jay Helget at St. Mary’s and Bethany Seifert and Matthew Miller at Sleepy Eye Public. The award recognizes seniors who have excelled in academics, arts, and athletics.
