60 years ago – Jan. 19, 1965
Mrs. Mary Wooldrik, 87, believed to be one of the oldest banking women in the nation, has resigned as chairman of the board of the State Bank of Sleepy Eye, it was announced today. Mrs. Wooldrik has been with the bank since 1931 when she became cashier.
Fire Friday afternoon extensively damaged the Otto Kotten farm home, nine miles south of Sleepy Eye. The James Doyles, who operate the Albin store, directly south of the farm, served hot coffee and doughnuts to the firemen. The Kottens were about to move to their new home in town, while their son Paul and family were getting ready to move from their home on West Maple to the farm.
45 years ago – Jan. 17, 1980
Del Monte Superintendent Ken Peacock announced a major plan for renovation of the plant’s corn building which would make the Sleepy Eye operation one of the most modern in the country. Renovation work will begin October 1, 1980, immediately following conclusion of the corn pack. At that time, all machinery in the corn plant buildings will be removed.
As of Saturday, Delmer Lambrecht completed 14 years as supervisor of postal operations at Sleepy Eye Post Office and traded his desk for a rural mail delivery route in the area. “I will be getting out of the paperwork and back on a route,” Delmer said.
30 years ago – Jan. 19, 1995
For almost a month, Jubilee Foods have offered customers the opportunity to enjoy the latest take-out/eat-in option in Sleepy Eye with the Jubilee Foods Deli. “The food is great and it’s reasonably priced,” said Karen Fischer, Deli Manager.
Sleepy Eye Public High School advanced art students will show their works at Art Show in the high school gym on Jan. 30. Students scheduled to display at the show are Cindy Berberich, Ryan Deibele, Curt Fischer, Mary Gallegos, Mike Galvin, Jessie Heiderschedt, Jolene Kral, Jason Maher, Manuel Sanchez, Amy Schumacher, Shannon Stimpert, Dustin Stoks, Tanya Treml, and Miranda Wurtzberger.

Julie Cook was shocked upon receiving this year’s Shining Star Community Service Award, for her work as a business owner and Chamber member, at the Sleepy Eye Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting, held at the Orchid Inn Thursday evening.
After numerous rounds of intense competition, Nick DeMaris took home the title of Geography Bee champion at St. Mary’s. The final question: Which Medierranean country on the southern tip of the Balkan Peninsula is Eirope’s largest exporter of cotton? Answer: Greece.
