60 years ago – August 27, 1964
The law office of Attorney Henry N. Somsen, Jr., of New Ulm has announced plans to open a law office in the Curran building on North Fifth. The quarters are those occupied until recently by Attorney E.A. Hauser who recently purchased the former Eckert building on East Main. In charge of the office will be Attorney Terrence M. Dempsey.
The goodwill jackpot Friday evening will be $300. Dennis Krueger, rural Sleepy Eye, was not present when his name was called for the $200 award last Friday. He will receive a certificate for five dollars.
45 years ago – August 30, 1979
Sleepy Eye city councilman Bob Froehling will be moving with his wife and family to Phoenix, Arizonia Thursday and are excited to be getting away from Minnesota winters. Bob said he is retiring after 24 years in service to the Minnesota Highway Patrol to take a position with the Arizona Public Service Department as a supervising officer of security.
Despite a constant drizzling rain Sunday, the 12th annual Sleepy Eye Jaycees Flight Breakfast was a success. Only two airplanes flew in for the event and the scheduled plane rides by Airport Manager Eldon Lowinske had to be canceled. The rain didn’t prevent the pancake breakfast in one of the airport hangars, however. According to co-chairman Perry Pietig, about 500 breakfasts were served.
30 years ago – September 1, 1994
Minnesota’s First Lady Susan Carlson was on the road last week hoping to help her husband Arne Carlson’s cause in his primary race against Allen Quist. One of her stops was Buttered Corn Day in Sleepy Eye where she took her turn serving corn. Although the weather was rough at times, raining in the early afternoon and strong winds in late afternoon, a good crown still came for corn and hamburgers.
What had been a pressing issue for the school board dissolved quickly as Board Chairman Dave Vosbeck reported that he had been contacted by a Sleepy Eye Arena Association member and was told that they are no longer interested in either of the district’s properties.
15 years ago – August 27, 2009
Four foreign exchange students will spend the school year in Sleepy Eye. Nanami Miyazawa from Japan will live with host parents Bruce and Janet Lokensgard. Anniken Kjolseth of Norway will live at the home of Mike and Lynne Schroepfer. Su, Chia-Yu (Hannah) of Taiwan and Sakuirat Bovornsantisuth (Pui) of Thailand will be living together at the home of Brian and Pam Poppenhagen.
“How often did you go to the Aquatic Center over the summer?” asked the Inquiring Photographer. Kendra Zuhlsdorf said “pretty much everyday.” Madison Roberts said, “Everyday. Well, almost everyday.” Jacob Lux said, “Um, all the time.” Conor Strong said, “Every time.”
