60 years ago – August 18, 1964

Eighty-four pilots from 42 towns registered when the annual Lions Flight Breakfast was held at the Sleepy Eye airport Sunday. Sponsors said there were 15 or 20 other pilots who failed to register. More than 600 were served at the breakfast. Gary Jones, 16, of Springfield won the prize for being the youngest pilot. A feature attraction at the flight breakfast was an exhibition of radio-controlled model airplane flying by Don Lambrecht.

Help is requested for getting the swimming and diving equipment out of the lake tomorrow evening. Work will begin at 7:30. The supervised summer swimming program came to a close Friday. Harry Hornbrook, recreation program chairman, said a lifeguard is no longer at the lake and persons swimming there do so at their own risk.

45 years ago – August 16, 1979

The Corn Stand operated by Sleepy Eye’s American Legion and Jaycees opened Monday to sell corn donated by Del Monte. Carl J. Schumacher and Hilmer Brekke operate the stand from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week, except on days when the cannery is not operating. Business has been booming. On Monday alone, the two men said they sold 850 dozen ears of corn.

Mrs. Grant (Karen) Fischer and Mrs. Errol (Rita) Hauser are making plans to open the Jack and Jill Nursery for children this fall. A full program of activities will be offered to four and five-year-old children of any church denomination. Classes will meet two half-days each week at Trinity Lutheran Church. Both women are experienced kindergarten teachers.

30 years ago – August 18, 1994

Over 200 people came to enjoy the delicious meal served during the 26th Annual Sleepy Eye Student Exchange Benefit. 1994-95 AFS student Conchita Modica of Venezuela was also on hand to welcome guests. Conchita will be staying with the Carroll Galvin family during the year and will be a senior at Sleepy Eye High School.

Cheryl Mason, Sleepy Eye, was recently awarded the Minnesota Wastewater Operators Association, Southwest Section Operator of the Year award. Mason is currently employed as a product certification coordinator at Del Monte. She has worked there for 19 years but first became involved in wastewater in 1989.

15 years ago – August 20, 2009

Sylvan Schumacher of rural Sleepy Eye was presented the 2009 Senior Citizen Distinguished Service Award at the Brown County Fair. Edward Meidl of Springfield was named Outstanding Senior Citizen.

On Saturday, Katherine Joyce, a St. Mary’s junior and daughter of Dr. James and Kathleen Joyce, will fly from Minneapolis to Ecuador where she will meet one of the three host families she will be staying with as part of her year-long Rotary Youth Exchange experience.
