50 years ago – April 4, 1974

It was a short spring. Winter played a return engagement in many parts of Minnesota yesterday and early today, bringing with it a half foot of snow. School was in session today in Sleepy Eye, but many schools throughout the state were closed, including New Ulm, Springfield and Comfrey.

Sleepy Eye city council Tuesday evening gave the Sportsmen’s Club permission to locate its trap-shooting range at the city farm south of town. The agreement included that the club would be responsible for installation of lights, maintenance costs, and upkeep of the range.

35 years ago – April 6, 1989

Despite some strong feelings among some businesses that it’s time for a change, Sleepy Eye businesses voted overwhelmingly to retain Monday night as the city’s shopping night. A uniform closing hour of 9 p.m. for the summer months was also approved by members of the retail division of the Chamber of Commerce.

Seventy years ago the American Legion formed in Sleepy Eye. Saturday the Legion and Auxiliary came together for a birthday party at the Servicemen’s Club. Highlight of the night was the honoring of Clarence “Spud” Dietz, Post adjutant for 35 years. Dietz joined the post in 1945, became commander in 1952, and has been adjutant since 1954, and is in his fourth year as 2nd District historian.

20 years ago – April 8, 2004

Seven eighth graders represented St. Mary’s School at the State Science Fair March 28-30 in St. Paul. Angela Armbruster earned a purple ribbon for her project entitled, “The Potency of Antacids.”

Rob Peterson and Vanessa Remus were selected as dignitaries for Spring Fling Week at Sleepy Eye High School. The week concluded with class relays, dunk tank, car packing, and a dance with DJ “Studio Blue” Friday evening.

5 years ago – April 4, 2019

Callie Bohnen was crowned Miss Sleepy Eye 2019 at Coronation Saturday evening. Princesses are Anna Sellner and Liv Nelson.

A special section in the paper offered congratulations to the City of Sleepy Eye on the new Police Station. Photos featuring residents at the March 25 Open House were featured.
