50 years ago – Jan. 9, 1975
The city council did not revoke the beer license of The Establishment, as improvements and fewer complaints of disturbance and vandalism were reported to police the past month.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pipes of Waseca are the new owners of the City Cafe, West Main. They purchased the business from Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Keyes and have taken possesion. Mrs. Pipes, the former Jean Wandersee, is a sister of Mrs. Keyes.
35 years ago – Jan. 11, 1990
King Tom Ganske and Queen Dawn Shellum were crowned Monday night at the Sleepy Eye Public Snow Week Coronation. They are reigning over the week’s festivities which continue tonight with a talent show.
“It’s been 12 years,” Superintenent Harold Kirchgasler reminisced. “That sounds impossible.” Kirchgasler came to the public school system in the summer of 1978 and will retire at the end of June 1990. Kirchgasler is also resigning his position on the city council at the end of June, a post he has held for five years. “I kind of felt that I had something to offer to the city,” he said. “I had some expertise in finance.” “It’s nice to sit on a board where you vote,” he said of the city council.
20 years ago – Jan. 13, 2005
As a basketball player at Worthington Community College, Fairmont native Jamie Pendergast didn’t pay much attention to the physical therapist. Until he injured a hamstring during a game, that is, and actually had to deal with one to get his strength back. That made an impression. After earning a degree in Athletic Training at Mankato State, Pendergast went on to earn a Masters Degree in Physical Therapy at Des Moines University. Last week, Pendergast became the Sleepy Eye Medical Center’s first full-time physical therapist.
With tax time officially here, head librarian Gail Christensen set out this year’s tax forms at the Dyckman Free Library last week.

The Sportsmen’s Park light show has been put away until next holiday season. Several volunteers gathered Thursday to tear down the Holiday Lights in Motion displays, which ranged from a Santa scene, and elaborate Nativity panorama and even a waving snowman. Shari Hittesdorf, co-founder of the holiday spectacle, said although the display if over for this year, the work is not. “We are already looking at next year and setting priorities and financial goals.”
A grand jury convened on Monday, Jan. 5 to determine whether or not Miguel Angel Vasquez should face first-degree murder charges in the death of his girlfriend, Amber Lechuga. Vasguez is accused of murdering Lechuga and attempting to burn the remains in a van just outside of Sleepy Eye on Sept. 26.
