60 years ago – Jan. 5, 1965

First baby of the New Year in Sleepy Eye is Mary Ann Peterman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Peterman, North Third. Born at Municipal hospital on New Year’s Day at 8:43 p.m., she weighed nine pounds, 14 ounces. She will be showered with gifts by Sleepy Eye firms. Mrs. Peterman is the former Janet Hansen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herb Hansen, North Fifth.

With this issue, The Sleepy Eye Herald-Dispatch goes to press under the guidance of a new publisher [Walter K. Mickelson]. He hopes to merit the goodwill of the people of Sleepy Eye and Brown County by the fairness, accuracy and completeness if news published in this newspaper.

45 years ago – Jan. 3, 1980

Norman Braun drove his route for the last time Monday morning. Braun, who owns Braun’s Sanitation with his son, Michael, recently decided to retire as of the first of the year. “I might have stayed with it a little longer,” said Braun, “but the fellow who is buying my share of the business, Brian Borth, wanted to start with the new year.”

For all practical purposes the corn harvest is complete according to Lerry Peichel, Brown County Extension Director. “We’re down to just patchwork now,” said Peichel, “There is always a little corn left here and there. Plowing is approximately 75 percent complete,” he said. “The rest will simply have to wait until next spring.”

30 years ago – Jan. 5, 1995

While the first year as a full-time police officer in Sleepy Eye has been a positive one, Mike Reynolds couldn’t turn down the opportunity of a position with the Brooklyn Center police force. “I’ve always wanted to get to the metro area,” Reynolds said. “It’s a been a dream of mine.” Reynolds said, “It was great working in Sleepy Eye. I like it here. I hope I made a difference. I can’t say enough for the experience I’ve gotten.”

The hard work has been worth it for Amy Wintheiser when she recently earned the title of Midshipman Captain through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC). She has been a member of NROTC since she was a freshman at Iowa State University. She will serve in her current position until she graduates in May when she will be commissioned an ensign in the United States Navy. Wintheiser is the second woman to hold the title of MIDN Captain at Iowa State.

15 years ago – Jan. 7, 2010

Whether sandboarding in the desert of San Pedro de Atacama or gazing upon the glaciers of Patagonia, Sonni Sellner had the experience of a lifetime in Chile last semester. She was among a group of St. Cloud State students studying in Chile. She took classes at the University of Concepcion and described the courses as fairly typical, though not without some challenges. “We had to think so much more, process everything in Spanish,” she said.

Cody Nachreiner’s career goal is to work as a conservation officer with the Department of Natural Resources. To reach his goal, Cody is attending Iowa Lakes Community College as a student in the law enforcement program. Cody recently learned his college education has been given a boost thanks to the Minnesota Sheriff’s Association Scholarship Program. He won a $600 scholarship, presented to him by Brown County Sheriff Rich Hoffmann.
