60 years ago – Dec. 10, 1964

No one could have known that Dean Krzmarzick, 7, was blind as he was playing around Rocky’s TV store Monday (tussling with an older brother). He was there to receive a radio from the Lions Club, presented by Ed Schroepfer, E.J. “Bud” Schmidt, Ray Hollmer and J.C. “Rocky” Rockvam.

Four officials were named in the village election at Cobden Tuesday. Donald Utz received 15 votes for trustee. O’Neill Rude was re-elected clerk with 16 votes. John Utz, elected constable, received seven votes. Harold Knutson, elected justice of the peace, received four votes.

45 years ago – Dec. 13, 1979

The Sleepy Eye Jaycees have completed a communication link with Santa’s workshop at the North Pole. According to Kevin Murphy, chairman of the project, a phone number was installed in Sleepy Eye that will put you through to Santa Claus himself. Santa is very busy this time of year, making his lists and checking them twice, but he will set aside Wednesday, Dec. 19 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. to accept calls strictly from Sleepy Eye area children.

Three Sleepy Eye students earned degrees at commencement exercises at St. Cloud State University Nov. 21. Gwen M. Broich, Peter R. Hillesheim and Carol H. Sellner each earned bachelor of science degrees.

30 years ago – Dec. 15, 1994

The Inquiring Photographer asked, “What is your favorite wintertime activity?” Sandy Domeier said, “Anything indoors.” Scott Morin said, “I don’t like winter.” [Youngsters] Jeff Tiedeken and Levy Zinniel said, “Sledding.”

It proved to be an interesting trip for Dave and Mardy Vosbeck on their recent journey to Russia. The main purpose of the trip was to spend time with Svetlana Manuilova who stayed with the Vosbecks last year through the AFS program. While Mardy stayed with Svetlana and her mother, Lyudmila, in the family’s hometown of Bryansk, Dave took a five-day hunting trip with Svetlana’s father, Nickolai.

15 years ago – Dec. 10, 2009

Snow comes in, school gets out — All area schools got out at 1:30 on Tuesday, Dec. 8, to avoid hitting bad roads on the ride home.

The Brown County Corn and Soybean Growers Association made a generous donation to the Sleepy Eye Area Food Shelf. They donated $500 in pork products (ham, hot dogs, etc.) and $250 in soybean products (crackers, cookies, margarine, etc.) [Pictured] were Shannon Schutz, Keith Lendt, Josephine Rose, Steve Ahlrich, and Jim Peterson.
