Out of the Past – April 25

60 years ago – April 30, 1964

The Seifert quads, children of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Seifert, rural Sleepy Eye, will mark their fourteenth birthday anniversaries Sunday. For many years they have been guests of Ernie Fliegel at the 620 club in Minneapolis. With the event falling on Sunday this year, the Seiferts have reversed the procedure and will host Fliegel and his wife at the Seifert home for birthday dinner, along with godparents and family friends.

Candidates for the board of education include George Ebenhoh, Norman Johns, Daniel Murphy, and Phil Heymans.

45 years ago – April 26, 1979

Sleepy Eye’s FFA chapter returned Tuesday from a very successful trip to the State FFA Convention in St. Paul. Dan Lendt was named state winner in Swine Production Proficiency. Brad Bartz received the 1979 Leadership Award. Deb Huiras was the chapter’s convention delegate. The chapter received the Triple Crown award for safety, BOAC, and national chapter.

Andrew Lochner’s 11th hour filing for a chair on the Sleepy Eye Board of Education expands the field to four candidates for the two positions open. Those who filed previously include incumbant Paul Stadick, Les Fischer and Douglas Thoms.

30 years ago – April 28, 1994

The Godahl Recreation Building was filled to capacity as residents, former residents, neighbors, and friends gathered on Saturday to celebrate the 100th year anniversary of the Nelson Albin Cooperative Store; better known as the Godahl Store. Special guest speaker was Lt. Governor Joanell Dyrstad.

Life continues to be an adventure for Freida Sellner who celebrated her 82nd birthday by taking her first motorcycle ride – in a side car with Larry Evers. For the last 15 years, Sellner has worked at the Sleepy Eye Care Center. She works Mondays and Tuesdays and comes in to volunteer at other times during the week, as well as stopping in for Thursday morning Mass each week.

15 years ago – April 23, 2009

In all things, Josh Clevenger of Sleepy Eye strives to reach the highest achievement, to attain the best of the best. As a Boy Scout, he recently did just that. Clevenger was one of four members of New Ulm Troop 25 to be honored as Eagle Scouts. His Eagle project entailed building four park benches and placing them along the Sleepy Eye Bike Trail. After graduation from Sleepy Eye Public School in May, Clevenger will attend West Point.

The Sleepy Eye Sportsmen’s Club donated $2,000 for chairs at the Sleepy Eye Aquatic Center and $500 to the fire department to go towards the new grass rig.
