50 years ago – April 18, 1974

Six hundred entries involving between 800 and 1,000 students, from 17 schools, will be included when the District 10 solo and ensemble contest is held at Sleepy Eye Public schools Friday. Lending an assist will be 75 people, including staff members, students and volunteers from the community.

More than 300 are expected to attend the 80th annual convention of the Minnesota Federation of Women’s Clubs at the Orchid Inn next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Many will attend the Tuesday session only. The staying overnight will be accommodated at the Orchid Motel and in private homes.

35 years ago – April 20, 1989

A year of public speaking, community contact, and dairy promotion has begun for Darial Dittbenner, Sleepy Eye, and Corinna Moldan, Comfrey. The two were crowned Brown County Dairy Princesses for 1989 and will take over from Anna and Martha Fischer, princesses of 1988.

Del Monte field superintendent Bob Breiholz will retire his Del Monte career May 1 after 31 years of full-time commitment – 20 of those in Sleepy Eye. He hasn’t had a summer off for more than 30 years so hopes to find some time for fishing and golfing.

20 years ago – April 22, 2004

The guest speaker for St. Mary’s Gold Cord banquet was 1997 St. Mary’s High School graduate George Schwint, son of George and LuAnn Schwint. He attended college at Michigan Tech where he received a bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering. Schwint presently enforces feedlot rules with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.

The city of Sleepy Eye will be enacting a $10 a night user’s fee effective May 1 for those wishing to camp at the Sportsmen’s Park campground. Recreation and Parks Director Daryl Bergs said the fee will defray costs association with installing electricity to the campground last last fall.

10 years ago – April 17, 2014

Jodi Arneson is in her first year teaching second graders at Sleepy Eye Public School, but with 14 years of teaching experience under her belt, and a classroom of second graders buzzing around her, it isn’t hard to see why she earned the KEYC News 12’s Golden Apple Award. “They’re like sponges, so it’s fun to see them always energized and I grow off of that,” said Arneson.

Julie Neubauer was honored at the St. Mary’s Dinner Theater banquet for her 22 years of service as director of St. Mary’s High School musicals. She was also honored during her last curtain call of “Shrek the Musical” and given a scrapbook full of acknowledgements and memories from past musical alumni. Neubauer will retire this spring.
