Les Haala 78, of Sleepy Eye died April 18, 2018 at Divine Providence Community Home

Les Haala 78, of Sleepy Eye, died April 18, 2018, at Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye. Service was held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, on Saturday, April 21. The clergy was Fr. George Schmitt. Interment was held at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements were with Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.sturmfh.com. Les H. Haala was born April 19, 1939 in Sleepy Eye to William and Laura (Wurtzberger) Haala. He grew up in Sleepy Eye and graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1957. He married Melva Prescott on Oct. 17, 1970 at St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Les worked for Sleepy Eye Farmer's Elevator for 27 years, many as fertilizer manager and general manager, and worked customer service at Chuck Spaeth Ford for 20 years. Les loved sports, especially baseball and basketball. He played at St. John's University and with the Sleepy Eye Indians in the Western-Mini League and the Leavenworth Orioles of the Tomahawk League. He played fast pitch softball for Berdan Wells and several slow pitch softball teams. Les coached the Sleepy Eye Legion and Leavenworth youth baseball for many years. Les was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, St. Mary's Cemetery Board and the Sleepy Eye Eagles Club. He was inducted into St. Mary's School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008. He enjoyed watching sports (especially his grandkids) and spending time with his family at the lake home on Rice Lake near Paynesville.

He is survived by his wife, Melva of Sleepy Eye; children: Brent (Pam) Haala of Kasson and Tim Haala of Eagan; grandchildren: Alex Haala and Brianna Haala; brothers: Delmar (Dorothy) Haala of Sleepy Eye and Lynn Haala of Sleepy Eye; sister, Verna (Leonard) Wendinger of Sleepy Eye; sister-in-law, DeeDee (Jerry) Braun of Eagan; brother-in-law, Gerry (Julie) Prescott of Bloomington; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; niece, LeAnn Wendinger; nephew, Larry Wendinger; and mother and father-in-law, Louise and Melvin Prescott.
