Trap shooting is a sport that is experiencing quite the boom in recent years. Trap shooting had started simply as a program for youth seeking guidance on how to shoot clay targets. Something to do “on the side” or “for fun”, but recently the increased popularity found its’ way to Sleepy Eye.

In the programs first year, the team had 22 student-athletes participate throughout the season. This past Sunday, the season came to a close after five weeks. Participants would have weekly “shoots” totaling 50 shots with two separate rounds of 25.

The team’s top three finishers were Hayden Zarn, Riley Strate, and Spencer Hoffman. Zarn averaged 19.8 on the season totalling for an average of 79%. Strate finished with an 18.5 season average, while Hoffman was third on the team with 17.1 Not only did Zarn lead the team in season average, but he also had the highest single round score shooting a 24 of 25.

Coach Mike Hardin found it rewarding to watch the participants improve throughout the season. “It was great to see everyone improve from our first round of shooting to our last round of shooting.” Hardin also acknowledged the last few shoots did not have ideal weather as it was very windy those days. “It was a challenge for everyone, but they adjusted well.”

Hardin also gave thanks and appreciation to his assistant coaches. “I would like to thank all of the assistant coaches who helped get this sport up and going in Sleepy Eye.” Hardin was assisted by Ryan and Jeff Zarn, Bryan Berkner, Matt Schmidt, and Andy Pelzel.

Lastly, Hardin thanked the sponsors as without them, the support would not have been the same. “A big Thank You to our sponsors Sleepy Eye Sportsmen’s Club along with the Sleepy Eye Servicemen’s Club, and Pheasants Forever.”

Hardin and the coaches look forward to next season. “We hope everyone had fun and enjoyed the season, we look forward to seeing everyone again next season.”
