The Sleepy Eye Parks department hosted fourth grade classes from Sleepy Eye Elementary and St. Mary's Elementary schools at the annual Arbor Day program at South Park on May 2. Mayor Wayne Pelzel spoke to the students, using his best "former" teacher skills, and the Natural Resources Conservation Service taught a lesson on soil health. Both classes performed with poems, songs and tree jokes. Then the students broke into four groups to plant trees in the park, to replace the very old trees, which had become dangerous and likely to fall at any time, so were removed over the last few years.
