Liv Nelson and John Mathiowetz are Lions Club Students of the Month.

Sleepy Eye High School senior Liv Nelson has several leadership roles this year, serving as senior class president, band president, Honor Society president, tennis team captain and cheer captain. Liv enjoys being part of school theater productions and recently had the lead role of Charlotte in “Charlotte’s Web.” Liv is also in high school choir, on the knowledge bowl team and belongs to FFA. Liv works at the City Limits as a waitress.

Liv finds value in putting in her best effort with all her activities. “I feel my values and strengths will help me succeed, because I always try my hardest to be the best I can,” she said.

Liv said the greatest influence in her life are her parents, because they’ve inspired her to pursue a career in medicine.

Plans following graduation: Liv plans to attend a four-year college and study medicine.

Hobbies: Liv’s hobbies include playing piano, painting and doing crafts, and hanging with her friends.

St. Mary’s High School senior John Mathiowetz is a member of the Honor Society, was a football captain this fall and also plays baseball. He is in the concert and pep bands and enjoys being in St. Mary’s school musicals. He volunteers with the Sleepy Eye Ambulance Service, having completed training in Mankato this past fall. John’s work experience includes lawn work, lifeguarding at the aquatic center and construction work for Mathiowetz Construction Co.

“I believe my ability to overcome obstacles I’ve encountered will help me reach my goals,” said John. “I have to work hard in school and work hard proving to others that size doesn’t matter when you have a big heart.”

John said his mom has been the greatest influence in his life. “She has ingrained important morals in me, taught me the importance of hard work and to always give respect to everyone.”

Plans following graduation: John plans to attend St. John’s University and pursue a degree in medicine. He hopes to become a doctor with Doctors without Borders and return to his birthplace of Vietnam to help those less fortunate.

Hobbies: John likes to be outdoors, hunting, 4-wheeling, water activities, movies, video games and napping.
