Sleepy Eye's traditional Memorial Day observance began with flag raising in Veteran’s Park downtown, followed by flag raising at St. Mary’s Cemetery (pictured at left) Sleepy Eye High School band, standing at right in the photo, played patriotic selections at each site. (Center) Vietnam era veteran, Mike Schauman, placed the wreath in honor of Vietnam veterans during the program at Home Cemetery. Nine wreaths were placed for veterans from the Civil War to the Iraq/Afghanistan War; flags were placed by Emma Fischer and Holly Sellner to honor the past year’s departed veterans and all Sleepy Eye veterans Killed in Action. After the program at Home Cemetery, the Sleepy Eye Honor Guard traveled to Leavenworth for flag raising and a program.
(Top right) The 10 a.m. flyover of a replica P-51 fighter plane, built and flown by Larry Lund, briefly interrupted the Memorial Address by Kayla Nason, retired Army.
Sharon Carr (lower right) was recognized for 45 years of service as Sleepy Eye Honor Guard bugler by Legion Commander Rick Mages, Marshal of the Day. Mages also thanked Carr for leading the various student buglers who serve along side her.
