The Sleepy Eye department was proud to receive the award for Prevention/Community Awareness.

Attending the State Fire Conference is nothing new for the Sleepy Eye Fire Department, but this spring the local firefighters who attended the conference experienced a special occasion for the department.

The 143rd Annual Minnesota State Fire Department Association Conference and Fire School was held in Alexandria, April 26 to 28. An Awards Ceremony is a yearly tradition at the MSFDA Conference to honor excellence within the fire service. The Sleepy Eye department was proud to receive one of the three awards presented—the award for Prevention/Community Awareness. (Firefighter and Department of the Year awards were also presented at the ceremony.)

The local person who nominated the Sleepy Eye Fire Department for this award praised the department for their community involvement, support to other departments and response to all they serve.

The nominator wrote about the Fire Prevention Week open house held at the fire station last October and said they were so impressed with all the activities for the kids, from putting a fire out with a fire extinguisher, to sitting in the trucks and trying on gear; along with promoting the Exit Drill In The Home and providing tours of the fire station.

Also listed was support to other departments, such as SEFD provided in the big elevator fire in Northrop in late December. The writer, an employee of Christensen Farms, said the local firefighters “were amazing at a recent barn fire [CF] had. Their response and containment of the fire made what could’ve been a total loss, much less.”

“Their participation with the schools, community events and the time they spend responding to calls, both big and small, are things I think should be recognized,” wrote the nominator. “Their purpose is to serve and protect and to educate . . . they do it and they do it great!”
