With a perfect 20-0 record on the season, Beltz 16U ASA team will play in state tournament this weekend, nationals next.

Sleepy Eye Beltz 16U ASA team finished their regular season last week with a perfect 20-0 record. They notched four wins on games Tuesday and Wednesday. The team then traveled to New Ulm on the weekend and came home as champions of the Southern Star Qualifier Tournament—earning a berth in this weekend’s state tournament.

On Tuesday, July 12, Beltz 16U played two games against Mankato Orange at home on the Prairieview field.

Sleepy Eye won the first game 15-0 in three innings. Anna Lux pitched and Ali Beltz caught. Beltz and Jody Hansen each had a homerun. Hansen also had a triple and six RBIs. Lux and Kelsie Kosak each had a double and Dani Weiss, Mariah Miller and Mal Helget each added a single and an RBI.

Sleepy Eye also won the second game 14-0 in four innings. Megan Labat pitched and Kosak caught. Hansen had a triple, a double and two RBIs. Miller added a double, a single, and one RBI. Kosak had two singles while Lux and Leslie Flores each added a single and two RBIs. Helget contributed a single and an RBI.

The following evening, Sleepy Eye took on Fairmont White for two make up games. They won the first game 9-1 in five innings and the second 16-2 in five innings as well. Lux pitched and Beltz caught game one; Labat pitched and Kosak caught game two. In these two combined games, Beltz hit a triple, a double and four singles. Hansen had two triples, one single and four RBIs. Lux contributed five singles and four RBIs, Dani Weiss added a double, two singles and one RBI. Labat had a double, a single and three RBIs and Helget had a triple, a single and two RBIs. Megan Sellner hit two singles and brought in a run, Kosak and Flores each had a single and an RBI.

Southern Star Qualifier Tournament Champions

On Saturday and Sunday, July 16 and 17, Beltz 16U played in the Southern Star Qualifier Tournament in New Ulm. The first day, Sleepy Eye won both of its games. Anna Lux started things off on a high note by pitching a perfect game against Worthington for a 15-0 win. The team then went on to beat Fairmont 15-1 in the second game. Having hot bats in the combined games were Dani Weiss with a triple, a double and two singles, Jody Hansen with two doubles and a single and Ali Beltz with a triple, a double and a single. Also contributing nicely were Leslie Flores with four singles, Lauren Klein with three, Megan Labat, Anna Lux and Kelsie Kosak with two singles each and Mariah Miller with one.

On day two, Sleepy Eye Beltz took on New Ulm Blue in its first game, winning 15-3. Lux pitched and Beltz caught, as they did for all five games of this tournament. Hansen had a double and three singles while Beltz had a double and two singles in this game.

Sleepy Eye Beltz 16s next took on their toughest competition of the tournament, the Sleepy Eye 18U team. For the Beltz team, Hansen, Beltz, Lux and Klein each had a single. A great running game helped the Beltz team squeak out a 2-1 victory. For the Sleepy Eye 18s McKayla Alrich did a great job of pitching. Natalie Stevens hit two singles and Maddie Hoffman and Holly Helget had one each.

In the championship game against New Ulm Red, Sleepy Eye Beltz started the first inning with five straight runs and added one more in the fifth. Hansen had a double and a single, Lux added three singles, Miller contributed a double, and Labat and Beltz each had a single. New Ulm Red picked up three runs in the fifth, but Sleepy Eye Beltz 16s pulled off the championship win 6-3.

State and Nationals up next

Following this tournament win, Beltz 16s now go on to play in the State Tournament in the cities on Saturday and Sunday, July 23 and 24. The following week they play in Nationals in Shoreview, which they qualified for by winning the June 25-26 tournament in Hutchinson.
