Librarian Andy Kelton got a big (bad) surprise when he arrived at work last Wednesday morning. A pipe in the drinking fountain had broken sometime after closing on Tuesday, flooding a large area of the library.

Kelton said seven shelving units had to be moved away from the wet area. That meant somewhere around 3,000 books had to be removed from the shelves. He said library assistant Melissa Jakobitz and her family, along with library aide Karen Kettner, helped him move everything.

“I removed 200 gallons of water with the shop vac,” said Kelton. “We had a carpet cleaning contractor come in to finish the drying process with dehumidifiers and blowers.”

The library was closed from Wednesday through Monday for clean up. Kelton was able to reopen the library Tuesday despite the stacks of books remaining to be returned to the shelves.
