On Tuesday, July 19 in Mankato, Sleepy Eye’s Legion team lost to Jordan, 12-2, in the opening round of the Sub-State Tournament. Starting on the mound was Sleepy Eye’s Jake Price. Price would throw three innings, recording three strikeouts, four walks,seven hits, and eight runs. Mason Sellner pitched the next two innings, allowing one walk, five hits, and four runs.
The Sleepy Eye Jr. Legion baseball team earned the Southwest District Sub-State Championship and a berth in the State Tournament which will be played in Ely, Aug.
On Monday, July 11 at Mankato, Sleepy Eye Legion lost a close baseball game to Mankato American in 7 innings. Mankato American 7, Sleepy Eye 6 Starting on the mound for Sleepy Eye was Arian Saenz.
The Stark Mites Baseball team traveled to Wabasso for the end of the year league tournament on Saturday and Sunday, July 16 and 17. In the first game Saturday, the Longhorns defeated Springfield 5-1, moving them to the next round of the winner’s bracket. In game two they matched up with Windom, coming out on top, 3-1. This kept them in the winners’ bracket going into Sunday.
On Wednesday, July 13 at Lake Crystal, the Sleepy Eye VFW team let one get away. With a 12-8 Sleepy Eye lead going into the 5th inning, Lake Crystal scored 4 to tie it in the 6th and managed the winning run in the bottom of the 7th inning. Final score Lake Crystal 13, Sleepy Eye 12.
The Sleepy Eye 14U Softball Team won the 16 team Southern Star Tournament in Mankato over the past weekend. On Saturday they defeated Blue Earth 15-0, MCW 7-1 and Marshall 13-0. On Sunday they lost to Kasson-Mantorville 0-1 in extra innings sending them to the losers bracket. Then they beat Lake Crystal 9-3 to get back to the championship bracket against Kasson-Mantorville where they had to win twice.
The Sleepy Eye Jr. Legion baseball team defeated Madelia, 10-0, on Tuesday, July 12 to earn the District 2 Sub-sub State East championship.
The Stark Rookies Baseball team traveled to Springfield on July 9 for the end of the year league tournament. In the first game of the day, the Longhorns defeated Sleepy Eye 3-0, moving them into the semifinals. In game two they matched up with Redwood Falls, coming out on top, 6-4. This put them into the championship game against Godahl. They finished the tournament with a very nice 9-2 victory. The team finished the year with a record of 15-1. The team is coached by Adam Fischer, Matt Mathiowetz, John Pelzel, and Chad Armbruster. On July 6 Sleepy Eye VFW defeated Maple River 9-8. Sleepy Eye scored six runs in the bottom of the 7th for the comeback.
The Sleepy Eye Jr. Legion baseball team opened play at their weekend tournament in Sioux Falls with a win over the Watertown Red Sox on Friday, July 8.
