We will publish our annual Play Ball section, featuring youth summer ball team photos, in the July 31 Herald-Dispatch. This is for the teams of the littlest kids, through the high school age teams.
The Senior Legion baseball team hosted the second annual Military Appreciation Night on July 1 and defeated Mankato Loyola Post 11, 9-3 in the featured game, wearing their special “military camo” jerseys. Each player found a sponsor for their jersey and the jerseys were auctioned off during the game with the proceeds going to a charity of the Sleepy Eye Legion’s choosing.
Last fall Bruce Woitas, St. Mary’s Head Baseball Coach, was selected as the Minnesota nominee, for the sport of baseball, for the National High School Athletic Coaches Assocation national coach of the year. Woitas said he was nominated by the Minnesota baseball coaches association executive board.
Talan Helget was selected to play in the Minnesota State High School Baseball Coaches All Star Series, played on June 19 and 20 at Chaska Athletic Park. Talan was a senior on the St. Mary’s Knights baseball team this spring.

Sleepy Eye Public School’s Paige Haala closed out an impressive high school softball career with being selected to compete in the 36th Minnesota Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Star Series, a competition that selects the best senior softball players in the state. This year’s event took place on Sunday, June 8 at Mankato’s Caswell Park and featured two games each for Class A through Class AAAA.
Ten River Valley Wildcats competed in the Minnesota Class A State Tournament at St. Michael-Albertville High School last week — five girls and five boys.
