The New Ulm Area Eagles wrestling team took second place out of 10 teams at the Gerry Bakke Memorial Invite in Buffalo, Saturday, Jan. 8. The Eagles had four wrestlers competing in championship matches. Wyatt Pollard (of Sleepy Eye) placed second overall for the 145 weight class. PROVIDED
The Eagles varsity hockey teams have been very successful so far. With just under one month to go in the regular season, the girls are 13-2. The boys have just over a month to go and are 10-3. Both notched 3 wins last week. Sleepy Eye students are among the stats leaders for both the boys and girls teams. Austin Uecker leads in goals with 11; Brooke Arneson leads the girls in goals with 17 and Julia Helget is second with 14; Helget leads in assists with 20.
According to our photographer, the atmosphere in St. Mary's gym was "electric" on Monday night, Jan. 3, when the local boys faced off in the crosstown basketball game. And in classic cross-town manner the game did not reflect the teams' records going in. With the Knights ranked number 1 on MN Basketball Hub and the Indians yet to catch a win, it was the Indians who came out fast in the first half, holding on for a halftime lead of 23-21.
The Eagles girls hockey team played in the two day tournament at Bernick's Arena in Sartell on Dec. 28 and 29, coming back with a win and a loss.
St. Mary’s Catholic School held their 40th Alumni and Friends Basketball Tournament on Jan. 1. The 2005-2006 team won the tournament, defeating the 1995-2000 team with a score of 37-30.
