Twenty-one teams participated in St. Mary’s School Alumni and Friends 35th Annual Golf Tournament on Sept. 6, held at the Sleepy Eye Golf Club.
The River Valley Wildcats tennis team played a tough and busy schedule last week with matches on Monday - at home against Redwood Area, Tuesday - at St. James and Thursday - at home against Fairmont; all losses.
Arian Saenz, a 2023 Sleepy Eye High School graduate, is in his junior year at the University of Minnesota, Morris, where he is a linebacker on the football team, the Cougars. His coach, Marty Hoffmann, is also a Sleepy Eye High School graduate. Saenz started the season by leading the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) in tackles in the first two weeks. He had 13 tackles in the first game of the season against Concordia, Chicago and 10 tackles against St. John’s University, Minn the following week. Saenz is majoring in Exercise Science.
SEU lost 0-35 at Murray County Central High School on Friday, Sept. 12. Murray dominated with two touchdowns and a two-point conversion in the first half and three touchdowns and a conversion in the second half.
Weather conditions were perfect for Tuesday’s [Sept. 9] meet at Norwood Young America. The course is a beautiful wooded path through Baylor park, making it a favorite for our runners.
The Sleepy Eye Indians faced off against GFW and the St. Mary’s Knights played Wabasso on Tuesday, Sept. 9, both at home. Both matches ended in victory for the Sleepy Eye teams.
We had an exciting meet at Tracy on Sept. 4. Thirteen teams participated in races that raced the forecasted weather events! Due to impending storms, the Tracy school administration decided to combine the boys and girls in each race, creating only three events — Division C (Jr High), JV and Varsity races. Division C ran 2000M with Elizabeth Fischer placing 6th for the girls and Josemaria Martinez leading the boys with a 19th place finish. All of our Division C athletes have improved their paces significantly in the last two weeks.
The River Valley Wildcats hosted Pipestone on Sept. 2 and played in a tournament in New Ulm on Saturday, Sept. 6. A home match with Redwood Valley on Sept. 4 was postponed due to weather and rescheduled to Sept. 8 (after newspaper deadline).
