Today, I am writing my last column as Mayor. I knew that this day was coming, but I didnât think I would feel remorseful about it. I thought that I would feel a sense of relief and welcome it saying âWell, that job is done.â But, instead Iâm feeling a little melancholy. I guess I have to admit that most of the time I really did enjoy the position and the work that went with it. It was a job with the opportunity to give back to a community that has been so good to me and my family.
Man has almost unlimited power to do damage and cause suffering, as we have been learning lately, and some slight power to do good, but as we grow up and pay attention to our surroundings, we see that we are beneficiaries of great gifts for which we can claim no credit, and so we have a day of thanksgiving in November, just as we’re bracing for winter.

As a 24-year veteran of the Minnesota National Guard, I know that when you raise your hand to serve, you’re not just sacrificing your time.
