News from the Chief

I am going to cover some alternative vehicle laws this month. With the few nice spots over the last month, I thought this would be a nice time to educate everyone about scooters/mopeds, electric bikes, 4-wheelers and side by sides.

Mayor’s Message

Our ongoing search for restaurants that would fit in Sleepy Eye seems to have some light glowing at the end of this long tunnel. Our EDA is bringing Johnny Vuong to Sleepy Eye to offer his top quality Chinese food, Monday, April 23, for lunch at the Community Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Johnny owns the Chinese Home Café in Truman and has been very successful there. We have been conferring with him for a number of months and he likes Sleepy Eye. This introduction to Sleepy Eye seems like a good way for the community and Johnny to get to know one another. He would come each Monday into the future. Let’s hope this opportunity turns into something positive for the community.

It was kind of fun being back in the office Monday morning. I can’t believe how long it took me to get organized to go there. I like to leave for work about two minutes before I want to be there. I must have spent 10 minutes packing up my laptop, notes and calendar, phone and some snacks. I barely walked in the door and turned on my computer in time for a 9 a.m. online staff meeting!

dmoldaschel@cherryroad.com Yes, we got a new phone number, and I’m not entirely sure I can explain why, other than to say it means a much shorter and easier to understand voice message when you call. Our new number is 507-216-8333.

Beyond Reason

This is one of those March weeks when I can speculate about whether spring has sprung without danger of sounding like a fool by the time you read it in the paper. All the weather forecasters have assured us that mild weather will prevail through the weekend (maybe even in 60s!). So, I’ll do it—I believe that spring has sprung!

It’s spring — building and home improvement time — do I need a building permit?

This is the time of year when home improvement projects or building additions are in the planning stages. Is there a building or remodeling project that you are planning? If so, the City of Sleepy Eye requires a building permit for various projects. That list includes roofing jobs, windows, additions to property such as a garage or utility sheds, heating and air conditioning, gas water heaters, remodeling in your home, siding, etc. All zones in the city require a building permit.

Love letter to a small town

When I started my career, I lived in California. I grew up in Sacramento, a town of 1,000,000. I later moved to a small town up north, Redding. Redding was a town with a population of 100,000 where the shock of living in such a “small town” was difficult to adjust to. In these towns, I’ve worked around journalism for the past 25 years. I have always loved journalism. It is the reason I sought my first job in newspapers (accounting), just so I could be near the printed word in the hopes that maybe someday, my words could be on the page.
