Beyond Reason

Mother’s Day is the one day a year when Mother gets to put her feet up and is waited on hand and foot by her minions. Father brings her an iced coffee, just the way she likes it. The children deliver the remote control, blankets, and a snack. Uninterrupted, Mother watches an entire episode of BBC-produced British period piece on PBS. It is pure bliss.

It is almost noon on Tuesday. I am expecting a message any minute to go take a picture at Public School (see the front page) while also listening to/watching the livestream for the State FFA Convention. Truthfully, I’m watching that because my two oldest grandchildren, from Maple River FFA, are set to appear on stage during today’s final general session when the last group of awards are announced. I expect to see some Sleepy Eye FFA members on the stage also. I already checked out photos on the State FFA Facebook page and saw a number of Sleepy Eye kids who were recognized with top awards during the earlier days of the convention.

May is Mental Health Month

Mental Health Awareness Month 2022 will begin on Sunday, May 1 and end on Tuesday, May 31. Mental Health Month was established in 1949 to increase awareness of the importance of mental health and wellness in Americans’ lives and to celebrate recovery from mental illness. Despite this bold campaign that began 73 years ago, we are still struggling to talk about and seek help to address our mental health. Mental Health Awareness month is represented by a green ribbon. You will see these green ribbons on display throughout the month of May at the Community Services Building located at 1117 Center Street, New Ulm, and in front of the Brown County drop-in center, Bridge on Center, located at 1113 Center St., New Ulm.

They say it’s Spring. But how do you know for sure? At first glance, it’s hard to tell it apart from Fall. Sure, the snow is melting. But underneath, there are the dead, brown leaves. Again. You may wonder: What the heck? I thought I bagged those up?! No, you bagged other leaves. But then more, other leaves fell and/or blew into your yard. Then it snowed. And you cannot bag leaves under the snow. Thus, there are the dead, brown leaves. Again. Sigh.

Don’t go looking for a Sports page because there isn’t one. After last Monday’s beautiful afternoon of local sports, every event has been postponed due to the weather. This afternoon (Tuesday, as I’m writing this) isn’t much nicer but since it isn’t snowing the kids are getting in their games. (So sorry I can’t get there, Brrrr.)

Want my opinion on the weather? Again? April is the cruelest month (one of my longest held beliefs.) Well, at least it was nice on Monday for the big Sleepy Eye Sports-orama! And, a good time was had by all. (Just think, if we had a boys tennis team, they could also be playing in that same neighborhood at the same time!) While the official plan is for CJ to take pictures at home baseball and softball games, there is a slight complication because he is on the track team.
