Kindness is free. Every once in a while I see Facebook posts with messages about kindness and how it can make a change in someone’s life (both the giver and receiver of kindness).

Our virtue for the month of May is “zeal” and it is such an incredibly fitting one for the conclusion of the 2021-2022 school year. “Zeal” is defined as “great energy or enthusiasm” – qualities that we are so blessed to witness in our school community every day.
The Sleepy Eye Family Aquatic Center (SEFAC) is tentatively set to open on Wednesday, June 1. Please watch for updates on this date as we get closer on our Facebook page or call 794-9501. Our hours are 12 to 7 p.m. daily. We will be offering swimming lessons this year for $35 per child, beginning with Session 1 from June 13-24, Session 2 from July 11-22, and Session 3 from August 1-12. You may call the pool at 794-9501 to sign your child(ren) up if you have not done so already. Private lessons are an option and will cost $40 for use of the facility, as well as paying the instructor. Please call the pool and we will take your name and number and have a WSI instructor call you to set up the lessons. Adult water aerobics/lap swim will begin Monday, June 6 and will be Monday through Friday at 7-8 a.m. or 7-8 p.m.
If you like to read, and if you are an old-timer like me, you probably have fond memories of the Dyckman Free Library from your childhood. One of my earliest memories in Sleepy Eye (we moved here in April of my first grade school year) was going to the library with my Grandpa Sandmann to get a library card. Grandpa had children from coast to coast, and each family had the “pleasure” of hosting him for visits that lasted a couple weeks. (He could be kind of bossy, but he did take me to the library that first summer.)
Despite the tornado warnings, we had a fabulous Open House last week! It was such a joy to showcase our beautiful library, I think Mr. Dyckman would approve of our care and continued use of this public institution he donated to the citizens of Sleepy Eye.
A trio of geese enjoyed a lovely day on Sleepy Eye Lake last week. Deb Moldaschel .
Are you too hot yet? I knew this would happen. Too cold for too long and then all of a sudden, I’m too hot.
Late into the evening as I clutched my pillow, the scene bore down for the second time. The list of “should haves” paraded before me. I should have taken in more water. I should have eaten healthier. I should have tended more tenderly to myself amidst the rush of the company. My body was telling me something, and as I paused, it came. Taking care of yourself is really about Me, not you. It’s actually quite simple. When you take care of yourself, when you take care of your body, the temple of the Holy Spirit of which I’ve blessed you with, you may serve Me well, better, more freely. When you make healthy choices, the freedom to serve resonates without having to pay heed to that which folly can bring down and literally stop you. It’s not selfish. It’s actually serving in a holy way. Taking care of yourself is freeing you up to do what I need. Tis a gift, you know.
Spring may finally be here and I promise I will only wear a spring jacket, no matter how cold it is! I often imagine that when the sun shines and the air warms a bit, that school kids get kind of antsy. It could be that cloudy, cool days are a teacher’s friend (but not a coach’s friend.) There are only two weeks left at Public School.
