Sleepy Eye School Board prepared to move ahead with hiring elementary principal

At last week’s School Board meeting, Superintendent John Cselovski noted that interviews for the elementary principal position would be held Monday, March 24. In an email Tuesday morning, Cselovski said the interviews were conducted by a committee of 13 members made up of the elementary leadership team, the high school principal, two board members and Cselovski.

March is Minnesota Food Share month

We might think of March as that iffy time when we aren’t sure if it’s winter or spring — this week is a prime example. But one thing isn’t changeable. March is a great time to support food shelves in Minnesota and Sleepy Eye has supported the Sleepy Eye Food Shelf each March, and throughout the year, for many years.

The other six days of Lent

As we entered the season of Lent this month, there has been a lot of discussion about what people are giving up for Lent. For those who might be unaware, Lent is a 40-day period when Christians repent of their sins, in preparation for Easter. Along with repentance, many Christians will also give something up. They might fast, meaning they will skip meals or meat for a purpose, which is to spend more time in prayer. For those who can’t give up meals (because it is bad for their health), some of them give up something else, like chocolate, coffee, TV, news media, and more. Many Christians give up their finances, and they donate to those in need. Lent is a time of simplicity, so the world is pushed to the side as we get ready to celebrate Easter morning, when the followers of Jesus discovered that His tomb was empty.

River Valley Speech team members compete last week

Five River Valley speakers competed in the Eagan Wildcat tournament at Eagan High School on Saturday, March 8. Lily Kallevig and Reagan Schmidt competed in extemporaneous reading, Abigail Jensen in prose, Kaylee Granda in drama, and Aubree Paplow in informative speaking. This tournament hosted over 1,100 students from both Class A and AA schools around Minnesota. Schmidt received 5th place in finals for extemporaneous reading out of 84 speakers. Granda received 3rd in the merit finals of prose and placed 9th out of 50 speakers.
