The River Valley Speech Team had 24 speakers compete in the MSHSL Section 3A tournament on Saturday, April 12 at Redwood Valley High School. Around 150 students from 15 schools in Section 3A competed for a chance to advance on to the MSHSL State Speech tournament. River Valley Speech team earned the Section 3A second place runner-up plaque again this year.
On Thursday and Friday, April 11 and 12, a Sleepy Eye Public Knowledge Bowl team traveled up to Cragun’s Resort in Brainerd to compete in the State Knowledge Bowl Tournament. This team earned their place at state by placing second at the regional meet in Mankato on March 10.
The River Valley speech team was among ten teams that competed in the MSHSL Section 3A Subsection A tournament on April 1 at Windom High School. Their hard work and diligent efforts were rewarded with the team earning this year’s Subsection champion title.
CherryRoad Media CEO Jeremy Gulban came to Sleepy Eye on Tuesday to speak about the new digitally printed newspaper style that is coming to Sleepy Eye, likely for the first issue in June. Gulban hosted a community meeting at the Sleepy Eye Brewing Company that afternoon where attendees could see samples of the new format and hear about other new initiatives that will be rolled out with the new newspaper.
The Knights of Columbus and the Sleepy Eye community used the power of pancakes to rally around the Hoffman family on Sunday, March 30.
On Saturday, March 29 the River Valley speakers competed in the Knights “Duel of the Fates” tournament in Tyler at RTR High School. This tournament was originally scheduled for earlier in the month but postponed due to weather. Though the postponement did affect the number of speakers able to attend this tournament, the River Valley speakers still worked hard and earned the first place team award.
Wow! How time flies! Our Aquatic Center opened on June 7, 2008, 17 years ago. These past couple of winters without snow have taken their toll on it.
Thirteen members of the Sleepy Eye FFA competed in the Roland Peterson Agriculture Education Science Fair held on March 13 at the University of Minnesota, St. Paul Campus. The Minnesota FFA Association uses this invitational as the Minnesota FFA’s Agriscience Fair. The highest-ranking FFA member or team of members with an agricultural project will advance to the national competition.
After hearing local county concerns about outdated human services software, State Representative Paul Torkelson (R-Hanska), who chairs the powerful Minnesota House Ways and Means Committee, said he is exploring ways to repurpose state funds to assist local agencies.
