Farm Bill discussion covers many topics

The Brown County Farmers Union arranged to have Julia Wickham, Agriculture, Energy & Environment Outreach Director for U.S. Senator Tina Smith of Minnesota, come to Sleepy Eye for a Farm Bill Listening Session on Tuesday afternoon, April 4 at the Sleepy Eye Coffee Co. About 20 people, farmers and others interested in farm policy, attended. Wickham held a similar session that morning in Gaylord.

Poppy’s owner charged with theft of Arena Association gambling funds

Dane Allen Burton, age 26, of Sleepy Eye was charged in Brown County District Court on March 30 with one felony count of theft and one felony count of unauthorized possession of gambling equipment. The charges relate to the Sleepy Eye Arena Association’s pull tab and e-tab property and money at Burton’s business, Poppy’s Bar and Play on the Railway, located at 300 1st Ave. North in Sleepy Eye. Burton’s address is listed as the same address, Apt. 1.

Metal Art Works Contest announced

Calling all metal workers and welders! Do you make metal works from new or used materials, “found metal,” or mixed materials? The Sleepy Eye Downtown Revitalization Committee invites you to showcase your metal art — and compete for $1,000 in cash prizes. Prizes include $500 for first place, $300 for second place, and $200 for third place, The Metal Art Works Contest is open to any metal artist, artisan or crafts person who works with metal. Artists will donate their contest piece to be placed and displayed around the community of Sleepy Eye. If the number of contest pieces are more numerous than available display locations, there may also be an auction or sale of the extra metal works, with the proceeds going to the Sleepy Eye Regional Foundation (SERF). Have some fun and see what you can create!

Hopefully sometime soon the weather will actually warm up enough for us all to go back outside. I have seen an uptick of people out and about, even though the cold is hanging around too long. Whether it is just being tired of the indoors, or if some of us just have a little more resilience to the cool temperatures, people are getting out more and more. With it comes the mix of traffic and pedestrians.
