Quick work by Sleepy Eye City Council Tuesday night

No one was surprised that the Sleepy Eye City Council meeting was a short one on Tuesday evening, April 11—the agenda didn’t contain any issues requiring a lot of council discussion. Unfortunately the meeting took 15 minutes, a minute shy of the short meeting record, said Police Chief Matt Andres, who was in attendance but didn’t have any business to bring before the council this month.

Preparing for severe spring weather

The long winter is ending here in Southern Minnesota, which brings us to spring — a time for fresh grass, blooming flowers, and warmer weather. Poppy’s owner jailed in Sibley County

Dane Allen Burton, owner of Poppy’s Bar and Play on the Railway in Sleepy Eye, who was charged in Brown County District Court with one felony count of theft and one felony count of unauthorized possession of gambling equipment (relating to the Sleepy Eye Arena Association’s pull tab and e-tab property and money), as reported in last week’s Herald-Dispatch, is currently (as of April 11) in custody in the Sibley County Jail. He is jailed on one misdemeanor count of Violation of Order for Protection and five misdemeanor counts of Domestic Abuse-Violation of Order for Protection, along with one felony county of Obstruct Legal Process (related to the circumstances of his arrest.)

EDA March update

The March EDA Board meeting was a planned extended meeting due to numerous topics of importance and the need for extra discussion time. The Board heard a presentation from Little Sprouts Learning Center representative Cody Groen and some of the other LSLC Board Members. Cody explained the status of the center as well as plans for the future of the childcare facility.

Sleepy Eye historian Elizabeth Scobie featured at BCHS program

The Brown County Historical Society presented its annual Women’s History Month program on March 30 at the Best Western in New Ulm. The program was titled “Tell Me More - Notable Women of Brown County.” The format was a repeat of last year’s popular program, “Do Tell” in which women noted in Brown County’s past were portrayed by volunteer reenacters. The “Tell” term in the titles referred to stories, or gossip, shared among friends (female and male) with fun comments about old time telephone party lines.
