5-year survey: Fewer farms, aging farmers

The number of farms in Brown County fell to 973 in 2022, a 6.4 percent drop from 2017, while the average age of local farmers is advancing into the late 50s.Those and a vast number of other statistics detailing the changing landscape of farming across the country and in Minnesota were released last week in the USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture.

Hospital getting new windows

Sleepy Eye Medical Center will replace nearly 80 windows this spring on its original 1940s building and 1960s addition.The project, slated to cost up to $340,145, was approved last week by the board that oversees the city-owned hospital and clinic.

County supports plan to realign road, improve safety at Hwy 4 intersection

A stretch of County Road 22 would be realigned at a dangerous intersection with Highway 4 south of Sleepy Eye under a proposal that received county commissioners’ endorsement Tuesday.The Brown County Highway Department recommended slightly realigning about 2,000 feet of County Road 22 so it meets Highway 4 at a right angle.

Decorated fighter pilot from Sleepy Eye nails high-risk landing

Something went so wrong during takeoff for Air Force pilot Brady Augustin that the Sleepy Eye native had two options to survive once his F-16 was airborne: eject or try to land wheels up, on the fighter jet’s belly.Augustin’s actions, skill and quick thinking that day in March 2022 led to another honor last week for the already highly decorated Airman and 2005 Sleepy Eye grad.
