The former owner of the defunct Poppy’s Bar & Play on the Railway was sentenced Monday to two years of supervised probation and 40 days of jail time already served for a criminal charge that followed the abrupt closure last year of his short-lived Sleepy Eye restaurant.Dane Allen Burton, 27, of Winthrop pleaded guilty to felony unauthorized possession of gambling equipment belonging to the Sleepy Eye Arena Association, which conducted charitable gambling pull tabs at Poppy’s.

Couple charged in dog’s death during frigid spell

A couple that was convicted two years ago of misdemeanor child neglect has been charged with felony mistreatment of an animal after police found an emaciated, dead dog in a Sleepy Eye apartment that was left with a thermostat turned off during frigid weather, resulting in a busted water pipe over a Main Street salon.Aaron Scott Grubham, 36, and Krista Michelle Grubham, 37, were charged Monday in Brown County District Court with felony animal neglect resulting in the death of a pet and a misdemeanor count of depriving the animal of necessary food, water or shelter.
