Chili feed March 13 to support United trap team

The Sleepy Eye United High School trap team expects to begin its fifth season later this month with strong numbers, one of the lowest fees in the state and, thanks to next week’s chili feed, better equipment for its competitions.Proceeds from the Sportsmen’s Club’s annual Chili and Soup Feed on March 13 at the Servicemen’s Club will benefit the trap team this year, with proceeds helping pay for two new target throwers.

School District pitches $30M community rec center project

The School District is pitching a proposal to build a community rec center and performing arts space that the city would operate and local taxpayers would partially fund with a bond referendum.Superintendent John Cselovszki shared his early vision of the project at a School Board meeting last week, saying it grew out of discussions this winter with Mayor Wayne Pelzel.

Board takes caution on mascot, delays choice

News that a Rochester middle school must drop Bison as its school nickname prompted the Sleepy Eye School Board to postpone a decision on its next mascot until it has assurances that whatever it chooses won’t face the same fate.A 17-member committee had recommended the School Board replace Indians with Bearcats and forwarded three other finalists it had considered: Phoenix, Storm and Bison.
