Chimney fire on Hillcrest Drive

The Sleepy Eye Fire Department responded to a house fire east of town Monday afternoon.The blaze on Hillcrest Drive began as a chimney fire and spread to the attic, requiring firefighters to cut into the roof to keep flames from spreading further, Fire Chief Aaron Schauman said.Firefighters received the call at 2:42 p.m.

Holiday Lights taking a year off

The organizers of the popular Sleepy Eye Holiday Lights in Motion event at Sportsmen’s Park are suspending the event for 2024 while they plan additions, retool how they use volunteers and search for more long-term help.The three primary people behind the attraction – Mike Suess, Shari Hittesdorf and Andy Pelzel – said in separate interviews last week that the demands of setting up, running and taking down the light show were becoming so great that they decided it best to take a year off, both for their own well-being and for the event.“This grew bigger and better than we ever dreamed it could be, so we need to step back and re-evaluate what we need from the community,” said Pelzel, who like the others volunteers his time.Hittesdorf said the year off should help the group rejuvenate – “the main players are burned out,” she said, herself included – and return with an improved show in 2025.“We have full intentions of coming back bigger and better,” she said.

Survey for rec center gets green light

The City Council on Tuesday agreed to split the cost of a $10,000 survey with the School District to see what people think about building a publicly funded community rec center, potentially with an indoor track, performing arts theater and other facilities.Sleepy Eye Schools Superintendent John Cselovszki told council members the survey company he is using intends to send the questionnaire by mail this spring to every household in the school district, which extends beyond the city limits.Councilors voted 4-0 (Scott Krzmarzick was absent) to contribute $5,000 for the survey after hearing Cselovszki present his vision of the project and questioning him about it.

Donald Trump won 75 percent (145 votes) of 193 Republican ballots cast in Sleepy Eye’s two precincts in Minnesota’s presidential primary on March 5, followed by Nikki Haley, who garnered 23 percent (45 votes), according to results from the Minnesota Secretary of State.In the DFL race, Joe Biden took 83 percent (39 votes) of 47 DFL ballots cast in Sleepy Eye, followed by Dean Phillips, who took 11 percent (5 votes).Haley and Phillips have both since ended their presidential campaigns.Also receiving Republican votes were former candidates Chris Christie (1) and Ron DeSantis (1) and a write-in (1).
