Overhaul of SEMC physical therapy space approved

Hospital Board members gave final approval last week to remodel and expand Sleepy Eye Medical Center’s physical therapy area, putting the project on a path to completion by late summer.A centerpiece of the revamped department will be a pediatric gym with a climbing wall and a ceiling rail for pediatric swings that can be used for sensory integration training, said Jamie Pendergast, SEMC’s Rehab Department manager.

SEMC mostly avoids impacts of cyberattack

Sleepy Eye Medical Center has seen minimal impacts from the Change Healthcare cyberattack that has disrupted payments and operations for hospitals and other providers across the country, SEMC Administrator Todd Consbruck said.The attack created delays in some of SEMC’s electronic remittances – what the center uses to post payments – but staff have a workaround to retrieve that info until the delays are resolved, according to a summary provided by Consbruck.Otherwise, SEMC has seen “minimal impact to payments – that we know of,” the summary said.Elsewhere, the attack has impacted payments to hospitals, physicians, pharmacists and other health care providers across the country, leaving many providers to worry about their ability to offer care in the absence of timely payments, the U.S.

Sleepy Eye Lions Club members took a few minutes during their annual waffle fundraiser Sunday to recognize the “heart beat” of their group – Russ Sorensen – with the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, the organization’s highest honor, for his decades of humanitarian service.Sorensen, a Lion’s member since 1980, has chaired the waffle feed and its predecessor, the pancake breakfast at the Orchid Inn, since the event’s inception more than 40 years ago, Tom Larson told the crowd at the Sleepy Eye Public School cafeteria.“I guarantee you that you’ve always seen the same face at the door, greeting you and collecting money,” Larson said.Sorensen has also served as the group’s treasurer for more than three decades and is in charge of collecting old glasses for people in developing countries, among his many other Lions duties.
