Fed up with damage, Council nixes community center party rentals

The City Council followed a recommendation from City Manager Bob Elston on Tuesday to stop renting the Sleepy Eye Community Center’s main room to private groups because of repeat damage left behind by parties.Elston said the last straw was his discovery about a week ago of permanent marker “pretty much scribbled from one end to the other” on the luxury vinyl plank floor that was installed about two years ago at a cost of about $15,000.

Alcohol involved in SE police officer’s motorcycle crash, State Patrol says

An off-duty Sleepy Eye Police Officer was injured early Sunday in a motorcycle crash involving alcohol, the Minnesota State Patrol reported.Taylor Bolinger, 32, was driving a 2013 Harley Davidson cruiser south on Highway 4 in Renville County when he swerved to miss a deer and went into the ditch at about 1:49 a.m., according to the State Patrol’s online incident summary.

For lake health, police talking to mow violators

A more formal, concerted enforcement effort to keep grass clippings out of streets to improve the health of Sleepy Eye Lake and other waters has so far gone smoothly, with officers speaking to several residents but not yet issuing any citations, Police Chief Matt Andres said Monday.“The reception actually has been really good,” he said.Andres said officers gave eight verbal warnings over the previous week about grass clippings being mowed or blown into the gutter.
