There is always time for another fun event on Sleepy Eye Lake and Lucas Heiderscheidt and friends did just that with the Sleepy Eye Pond Hockey Classic on Saturday, Jan. 22 as hockey enthusiasts around the state were participating in Hockey Day Minnesota— a week long celebration of outdoor hockey.
The fun on Sleepy Eye Lake will continue with the annual Fishing Derby sponsored by the Sleepy Eye Sportsmen’s Club on Sunday, Feb. 6 from noon to 3 p.m. This is not just any fishing derby, it’s the 40th Annual Fishing Derby!
The District 84 Board of Education meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 19 included a number of annual items, such as election of officers and appointment of school board members to the various committees. Officers were re-elected: Chairperson - Darla Remus, Vice Chair - Casey Coulson, Clerk - Sheila Wurtzberger, Treasurer - Joleen Dittbenner.
Each year our local high schools choose a senior girl and boy to represent the school as a Triple ‘A’ Award nominee. This year’s local award winners are Brooklyn Moldan and Mason Sellner at Sleepy Eye High School and Julia Helget and Jacob Stevens at St. Mary’s High School.
One of our favorite weeks of each school year is Catholic Schools Week, a time set aside to celebrate what it means to be a Catholic school and, specifically, what it means to be St. Mary’s. This year, Catholic Schools Week will be celebrated from Saturday, Jan. 29 to Friday, Feb. 4. However, the planning and organizing for this special week began months ago with each event and activity designed to celebrate our school community, offer our gratitude to those who support St. Mary’s and show our thankfulness to God for His many blessings to us.

Mary Hoffmann, Katie Emmett, and McKenzie Wagelie, Sleepy Eye Public School Ag. teachers, attended the Minnesota Association of Agricultural Educators (MAAE) Ag. Technology Conference in St. Cloud Jan. 20-22. This conference included attending professional development workshops, a meeting for the Agricultural Diversity and Leadership/Technical Skill Challenge Grant, award winner recognition, and updates from all major partners in Team Ag. Ed.
Question: My wife slid off the state highway this morning. She came to a stop in the median ditch, unhurt but rattled - only needing to be pulled out. When she called me I told her to call the State Patrol and stay in the car until you arrived. What is the right procedure to follow when a driver ends up stuck in the ditch? Do you contact the towing company or is that the responsibility of the stuck driver?
Mayor Pelzel asked me to serve on Sleepy Eye's 150th Anniversary committee to help with publicity. Of course I said yes, because I would be writing about the plans anyway. The committee had their second meeting last week and a few things have been decided on. While we plan to participate in the Chamber of Commerce's traditional celebration the weekend of Aug. 19, 20 and 21, we are not limiting the celebration of our town's 150th birthday to just one weekend! We are working on plans to celebrate in some way throughout the year.
A new year and a new look! Our remodel project at the library is in full swing. Thank you, patrons and staff, for putting up with the noise, dust and crowded conditions as we moved EVERYTHING to lay new carpet. All the hard work paid off as the new flooring on the main level is finished and looks amazing!
