Session priorities to get Minnesota on the right track

Last week Monday, the Minnesota Legislature reconvened in St. Paul to begin the 2022 session. The state’s projected $7.7 billion surplus will be one of the most discussed items in St. Paul. Following record inflation, Senator Dahms and Senate Republicans are pitching a series of tax cuts targeted to working Minnesotans, families, and seniors to help them afford their everyday life. Republicans passed several tax cuts in the last five years including the first income rate tax cuts in 20 years.

River Valley Speech team begins competitive season

The River Valley Speech team kicked off their tournament season on Saturday, Feb. 5 with a small group competing in the Worthington Trojan tournament. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, last year’s competitive speech season had to be completed virtually. Therefore, for the majority of the speakers competing this season, this was their first ever “in-person” speech tournament.

Students learn by experience

It’s long been an accepted thought in education that students have different learning styles. Some students react well to reading textbooks and listening to lectures to absorb the information a course covers. Some students have better results when they experience the lesson in a more hands-on way. Reinforcing classroom lessons with real experiences—learning by doing—is an excellent way to keep students interested in what they’re learning and invested in the outcome. Following are stories of how two local teachers have expanded classroom lessons to include the “real thing.”

The University of Wisconsin-Stout announced Alexa Owens of Sleepy Eye was named to the Dean's List for the fall 2021 semester for earning a GPA of 3.5 or above. North Dakota State University announced the following students from Sleepy Eye have been named to the fall semester Dean's List for achieving a GPA of 3.50 or higher: Lexie Anderson, Sophia Portner, and Kadon Strong.
