40th annual Fishing Derby is largest ever

The Sleepy Eye Sportsmen's Club's 40th annual Fishing Derby on Sunday, Feb. 6 was a record breaker with 1,022 people registered for the fishing contest and probably 1,000 more people on the ice enjoying the fun. Despite a cold wind, everyone seemed to be happy with the day. Sportsmen's Club president Lynn Krenz said that everything went very well. "Now we start working on plans for next year!" he said Monday morning.

Mayor’s Message

Last Saturday evening at the Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Meeting, I was given the honor of presenting the ”Shining Star Award” to the Sleepy Eye Sportsmen's Club. Significantly involved in the community, this organization sponsors the annual Fishing Tournament on Sleepy Eye Lake each winter. This year was their 40th Tournament. In that time it has grown to be the biggest and the best in the area. Just as noteworthy is the fact that they donate all the money back to make improvements at the lake and in the parks. They take care of the trap range, they’re responsible for a shelter in the park, and docks in the lake just to name a few of their contributions. This organization is very deserving of the award.

Students learn by experience

It’s long been an accepted thought in education that students have different learning styles. Some students react well to reading textbooks and listening to lectures to absorb the information a course covers. Some students have better results when they experience the lesson in a more hands-on way. Reinforcing classroom lessons with real experiences—learning by doing—is an excellent way to keep students interested in what they’re learning and invested in the outcome. Following are stories of how two local teachers have expanded classroom lessons to include the “real thing.”

SEHS ONE ACT PLAY CAST COMPETES IN SUBSECTION COMPETITION

Subsection Competition for One Act Play was held Saturday, Jan. 29 in Madelia. Sleepy Eye High School presented the play "Rock of Ages" by Mary Kron. The story is about the main character, Rilla, who finally got her life back after her husband was killed in a mining accident. Her friends in the community have also suffered from the mining accident. Nine years later a second cave-in has happened. Most of the characters know that Rilla's son was secretly working in the mines, but Rilla does not. Now, the characters all have to try to survive another tragedy. Pictured are cast members, from left: Miah Brown, Leo Fernandez, Paige Thoms, Megan Sellner, Leisha Martinez, Anna Johnson, Kamille Capacia, and Alexandria Confer. They were directed by Kate Nelson.
